Hello,

OK guys and gals here's the deal

1960: The Viking Norseman twin hose regulator includes the first octopus regulator and Maurice Fenzy patents the first commercially successful BCD.

I think you'll find that the term 'octopus' refers to the combination of hoses on the 2 divers (8 total)

Now we are getting somewhere! So,we pop to http://www.wtdrmsii.com/scuba_diving_history.htm and we see the party of the first part, the invention of the octopus.

The second part is that because all those hoses added up to 8 when the two divers were joined in a emergency, the term "octopus" was applied. An oceanic fauna reference! Very clever.

But I guess Rainreg did not want the Cabernet--he was my "horse", but you delivered the answer, Blacknet. Unless you want to confess something....

Joewr--now happy as a clam, another of the oceanic fauna

Hello,

well that url is invalid. The url I used is at http://www.divinghistory.com/scubatimeline2.html As for the second part it came out of my old OLD scuba manual (well part of it did) they state to watch the dangling hoses and not get wraped in them while buddy breathing in an emergency (well they also state you can use your bcd as a third breathing device). This was back in the day when sex was safe, diving was dangerous and dive computers was big boat ancors...

Ed,

When I used my search engine to find "Viking Norseman Scuba History, I get the URL I posted and it worked just fine. Then when I put it on the Board, it lists the site as "invalid". So, do me a favor, please use the process I did and see if you find a listing for Scuba History...Okay? Let me know. I am going to use your URL and see if the same site comes up.

See you in a few minutes...

Hello,

Actually with google I get the link I posted and some semi-related links and 2 p0rn links (not going there).

Ed

Do you want to get us regulated by LD? Let's keep the porn outta this conversation! Anyhow, I tried your URL and got a different site than mine. Same info, different site. But what is puzzling to me is that I cannot get it to work on my posting to you...Where did you say we can use a computer for an anchor?

Okay, now, I've got the documentation on the invention of the "octopus", how about some documentation on the name? I am a real history buff and want to make sure I have got it right--not that I do not trust you--but I do have the silver locked up!

Joewr

Hello,

Well the term has been elusive so far. However I am assuming (you know what they say about assuming right? that it's what I stated (the combo of the 2 divers dangling hoses makes 8) and the manual states to watch the hoses and not get tangled in them, this is in my peterson manual.

Ed

but we are back where we started--what is the derivation of the name? I'll buy your explanation: it is the most logical so far...2 X 4 = 8. But I really want some documentation. The gentleman named Divebum1 may have it in a discontinued magazine. Let's see what he says.

It's been a pleasure to do business with you!

Joewr

Oh foolish mortals... simply take the "l" off of the end of your URL and it will work just fine.

http://www.wtdrmsii.com/scuba_diving_history.htm

Geesh, now I gotta clean up the URLs after these guys as well...

:tease:

my hero! That is the second time I did that. Just a Pavlov's Dog syndrome--write "htm" and the "l" comes dribbling down.

Hey, you really like me, you really like me--to quote an award winning Hollywood star!

Thanks, Doc, but I would prefer that you not let on that I am mortal--bad for the rep!
