why do you take the mod stickers off to vip the tank?

no one has ever done that to mine before

I would make you peel all stickers off of the cylinder before I inspected it. It is impossible to inspect 100% off the exterior surface with any sticker/decal on the cylinder. The sticker could vary well be covering up a dent, cut, gash or even some isolated heat damage on the cylinder. If the cylinder is being inspected with any stickers on it then it is not a vary thorough inspection.

Using it as a permanent solution is where the problem is.

It's only permanent until the next fix.. :D

That's how I was trained also. I take the labels off on my personal bottles only because they are so scuffed up, it's time to replace them.

When I do a VIP on a nice looking bottle with little in the way of scuffs, dents and dings, I wont' take off those big ugly stickers. I'll give the bottle under the label a good feel and if all is well, call it a day. I see no need for removing them without indicating some cause.

Having said that, most labels are pretty scuffed and I'll remove those in a heartbeat.

Glad you're not my VIP guy :)

Not sure if serious or not...

In regards to removing the stickers that adhere and conform to the contour of the tank... I'll just have my tanks VIP'd by someone who doesn't need to remove them to tell if there is a dent or gouge under the (extremely thin) sticker. Nbd.

It maybe something minor but the instructor has to cover him/herself. I have seen many inspectors pass a cylinder covered with stickers so to each his own.

You can easily put some filler in a gouge and cover it up leaving it undetectable without peeling the sticker. Not all people are honest.

Not likely. Can it happen, sure, but I think you're reaching for a reason to sell another one of those big NITROX stickers. :D

I don't have stickers all over my tanks, but if I did and you took 'em off without good cause, that would be the last time you VIPd my bottles.

Half kidding. I see no reason to affix a litho when a marker will do the job. To each his own in this regard.

I only VIP my own cylinders and I don't sell Nitrox wraps. Its just the way I was trained and it makes good sense to me. I agree its not likely but I wouldn't put my inspector number on a cylinder if I wasn't 100% sure was safe.

There is no such thing as 100% safe. Not being a dick, but after some years under my belt I know when to be anal and when not to be. Most times I scrape the stickers off, but not all the time. I always do on my own because they are beat up and ready for replacement, just as most others are. But not all.

Do what you must to sleep at night, I'm comfortable using some judgement on my work.

I agree that you cant be 100% sure so I guess I should have said that I wont put my inspector number on a cylinder if I don't conduct a thorough inspection and to me that means 100% of the surface area. Considering the cost of a sticker I don't get emotionally attached to them.

How would you inspect 100% of the external surface of the cylinder without scraping off all of the stickers?????
