After reading several such lost at sea incidents, I make sure I’m prepared for it & hope it never happens to me (knock on wood).

In fact, the diver said, that he sent up the SMB early, when he noticed, that they were drifting faster the than anticipated.

I don't know, I rather have "the means to call that boat to me" on me than hoping on things to conspire to be seen and hoping minutes don't turn to hours, hourd don't turn to days or eternal.
Now, if the boat also does not react to mirror signals, nor radio, yeah then I surely could join in that sentiment... but, I just can't seem to be willing to trust litterally my life to the thought "oh, no matter what, someone on the boat will see my little 6' DSMB in that big ocean..."

That’s why I carry my PLB1. After a couple hours of no response, I’ll launch it & let NOAA contact the local SAR authority & US Navy to find me.

Hmm, it doesn't sound like he holds hard feelings at all:

"The operators of their dive boat are being questioned by local authorities in connection with the ordeal but LaFrance is adamant that the crew did all they could to try and find them.

“I know for sure they looked for us. I know for sure they contacted the coast guard,” he said, choking back tears. “These guys are my friends. They were devastated. They went into the water looking for us.”"

That’s good. That’s what the dive operator is supposed to do.
