    Light Canon

I've had a light cannon for three years and it's great. I've also put 3 or 4 new bulbs in it due to clumsiness...drop it off a tailgate and the bulb is usually done. I just got the Green Force 23 watt HID canister at DEMA and it doesn't seem twice as bright as the LC. On the other hand, it has a...

    My Booty stinks.

As I have said many times, it's time to give up the booty! Getting into a new booty might change your life!

    Do you Drink and Dive?

I read a book about spearfishing on the gulf coast oil rigs in the 60's. The guy who wrote it said they dove in polyester disco clothes because they didn't have wetsuits. They would dive to 150 feet and shoot a gigantic fish and go for a ride until it tired or they ran out of air. Since they...

    Blowing bubbles

Try making the ahhhh sound for as long as you can, time yourself and try again. With practice, you can stretch it for longer than 30 seconds, and that is without expansion. That has helped some of my students build a little confidence.

Few tips for some new divers in cold water please =)

I agree that getting someone experienced to go out for a dive or two is a good idea. If you don't want to pay a Divemaster, hang out at your LDS and get to know some divers. Be sure to check the tide tables and understand the currents where you dive. Everywhere from Port Hardy to Puget Sound can...

    Reg Maintenance by unauthorized dealer?

If a shop is not a dealer of a brand, most manufacturers will not sell them parts. Sometimes a reg or BCD just needs cleaned, but even then, there are small parts that the manufacturer recommends replacing.

    Post-trip reg/octo care

A good 24 hour soak in warm water will prevent deposits from forming on the reg. If you don't soak, you will soon find white salt deposits. If you do get water in the reg, get it cleaned soon. Corrosion inside the reg can go unnoticed until it causes a failure.

    EANx Shaken or Stirred?

If you partial pressure blend at room temperature (say 70 degrees), and analyze your gas immediately and again after 24 hours, you will see a difference (not consistantly the same from tank to tank) in the O2 percentage. The rolling of tanks to blend the gases accelerates the mixing of gas...

Reg help, feels out of breath at 100ft?

If you are sure the tank valve was fully open, then my guess would be that the Intermediate Pressure is set too low. Have it checked by a technician.

    Most Reliable Regs?

I work on regulators for my LDS and for the Army SF dive teams. The Army uses the U.S. Divers Conshelf XIV, old, but reliable and durable. The LDS recreational divers are big on the Aqualung Titan and Legend, and Apeks ATX 100 and 200's. I have also repaired many Mares regs for the LDS rental...

    Recertification?

I don't know, it's kind of a Darwin Awards thing... if you aren't smart enough to take a refresher course when you've gotten rusty, you are just weeding out the gene pool.

comments on apeks atx 200/black pearl

I have the Black Pearl and liked it so much that I bought the ATX 200 for my wife. (no more Pearls in stock!)

What are these vintage fins worth?

Like everything else, they are worth whatever someone else is willing to pay! I picked up a set of scuba gear at a yard sale for 15 bucks a couple of years ago. It included a wetsuit, fins, tank with J valve, dive knife, BCD and a two hose regulator from 1965. The guy was the original owner and...

    weight intergrated system bcd

One option is to use a small weight belt and some shot weight in the BC. That way, if you have to ditch the belt, you won't shoot to the surface as quickly and you won't lose all of your weights.

    Double tanks means double regulators?

Older. Back in the 50's, a tapered, 1/2" valve was in use and still occasionally show up in dive shops for inspections and hydros.
