inner tubes work well.

in a pinch I had to cut the tag off my frequent flyer bag tag which was just bungee cord, but I didn't have an option while in the middle of a holidays. I prefer inner tubes to bungee cord as it's thicker (as thick as you like, actually) and less fiddly if you don't want to/can't look down to see what's going on.

Two words: Thigh pockets. Another alternative to dang;ling gear. I have on for each leg, each secured by two very wide velcro bands. Someone made them for me, but I can't recall who. Use canvas or similar material ( or whatever that stuff is used to make camping tents. ) very servicable, and I've never lost one. Pocket flap is also secured by generous area of velcro.
