i fell down today ust outside of scc and my middle finger on my right hand bent all the way back. It ripped open my skin on the opposite side...and my finger was completely bent the wrong way. Everyone told me I had a compound fracture,,,they said they could see the bone sticking out. they called an ambulance I went to the hospital. they gave me an iv and called an orthopedic surgeon. they took an xray and my knuckle was completely dislodged from where it should be the xray looks wicked. but it is not broken the surgeon gave me shots in my fingers to numb it and he pulled it back into place I could hear the pop. He then sewed up my finger with 5 stitches. I have a cast on my middle finger. Lookds like I am giving everone the 'finger' I fell when it was raining really hard and my flip flop caught on the uneven concrete. i made it over to playa del carmen, but no cenotes for me.:shakehead:
my hospital visit was expensive but my insurance will cover all of it.

mary---cannot type so good

Ouch, sorry to hear that.

The good thing is it sounds like full recovery will be had. :)

Yes...and thank you. I feel like a :dork2:

No a Dork tries to walk it off or not seek help for hours/days, you did the right thing. You're in another country and injured, scarey enough. Vacations will come and go, but losing the ability to sincerly flip someone the bird in traffic...well, that is a life changing moment.

You will live and get better, just pray someone/anyone asks directions and not you can point them the way....and laugh about it.

Mary, I hope you recover quickly. Not sure what your dive plans were for the rest of your visit, but you can look at the bright side of things. You got a full weeks worth of diving in Cozumel.

Did the doctor say anything about not diving or keeping the finger out of the water? I know you were talking about doing a whale shark swim. Is that out now?

yes surgeon says stitces come out 10 days. splint for two weeks. he says i run risk of ifection. am on antibiotic right now. he had to dig dirt and rock out of my wound with forcepts

Sorry to hear that, but hopefully you'll find a way to still enjoy the rest of your vacation.

I hope you're on the mend.....it's tough to get hurt on vacation, I know.

I broke my ankle on a liveaboard trip once. Made it to a large metropolitan Canadian hospital on a Friday and they couldn't fix me up for 4 days as there wouldn't be an ortho in till Tuesday. (Nationalized healthcare anyone???) I came home instead and got fixed up rightaway.

Anyway, when you get home, you might want to have a hand specialist take a look and make sure everything is mending properly. Peace of mind.
