A ScubaBoard Staff Message...

This is BASIC Scuba: a green zone.

There is no room for politics here: take that to the Pub, please. Posts containing political commentary have been deleted or edited by me. That goes double for snarky off topic posts.

The topic is how the shutdown is affecting Scuba and travel.

Please keep to that narrow topic and reserve your political commentary for the Pub, where it belongs.

I was supposed to start a government job this year and could not. I have had to put off planned gear purchases and scheduling dive travel.

FCC for AI transmitters - Shearwater recalled their yellow transmiters due to concerns on potential faulty programming by the Mfr on some and delivery of replacement yellow transmitters is on hold as the repregrammed units require FCC approval.
I can see how some would be affected. Good idea to have a backup--even the old analog stuff.

Since I'm not diving SM anymore, I emailed and requested a gray replacement transmitter instead. It's in the mail to me.

Thanks - good to know.

FCC is not involved in the voluntary recall. We are waiting on approval to start replacing yellow transmitters from CPSC (Consumer Protection). They are still affected by the US gov't shutdown.

My mistake then, thanks for clarifying. I am curious though as to what aspect of an AI transmitter would fall under CPSC jurisdiction - seems an odd agency to be involved with a radio transmitter versus FCC? Can you clarify?

EDIT - never mind - I see that they do oversee things like radio transmitters for RC airplanes too!

Flying in and out of NYC airports I have seen no impact due to government shutdown. Weather is a different story though...

My brother works for a contractor for the EPA. When he ran out of billable work, he did overhead work. Now he is at home. He won’t get any back pay, he will get unemployment (he did during the last one).

TSA agents doing screening are some of the lowest paid federal employees. They are not going to be dipping into their trust fund as a stop gap against delayed payments. Even if 95% of federal employees have saving tocover the shutdown, that leaves 40,000 employees screwed. Those with security clearances need to keep their credit scores clean to keep their clearances. And how many baggage inspectors or prison guards will succumb to temptation and take a handout to let a bag through unchecked?

Stores, hotels, bars and restaurants around national parks and federal facilities are not going to be compensated for lost business, either.
