The Cat Came Back

Written By: Harry S. Miller (with later folk additions)

Old Mister Johnson had troubles of his own
He had a yellow cat which wouldn't leave its home;
He tried and he tried to give the cat away,
He gave it to a man goin' far, far away.

But the cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back, we thought he was a goner
But the cat came back; it just couldn't stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea

The man around the corner swore he'd kill the cat on sight,
He loaded up his shotgun with nails and dynamite;
He waited and he waited for the cat to come around,
Ninety seven pieces of the man is all they found.

But the cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back, we thought he was a goner
But the cat came back; it just couldn't stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea

He gave it to a little boy with a dollar note,
Told him for to take it up the river in a boat;
They tied a rope around its neck, it must have weighed a pound
Now they drag the river for a little boy that's drowned.

But the cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back, we thought he was a goner
But the cat came back; it just couldn't stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea

He gave it to a man going up in a balloon,
He told him for to take it to the man in the moon;
The balloon came down about ninety miles away,
Where he is now, well I dare not say.

But the cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back, we thought he was a goner
But the cat came back; it just couldn't stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea

He gave it to a man going way out West,
Told him for to take it to the one he loved the best;
First the train hit the curve, then it jumped the rail,
Not a soul was left behind to tell the gruesome tale.

But the cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back, we thought he was a goner
But the cat came back; it just couldn't stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea

The cat it had some company one night out in the yard,
Someone threw a boot-jack, and they threw it mighty hard;
It caught the cat behind the ear, she thought it rather slight,
When along came a brick-bat and knocked the cat out of sight

But the cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back, we thought he was a goner
But the cat came back; it just couldn't stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea

Away across the ocean they did send the cat at last,
Vessel only out a day and making water fast;
People all began to pray, the boat began to toss,
A great big gust of wind came by and every soul was lost.

But the cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back, we thought he was a goner
But the cat came back; it just couldn't stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea

On a telegraph wire, sparrows sitting in a bunch,
The cat was feeling hungry, thought she'd like 'em for a lunch;
Climbing softly up the pole, and when she reached the top,
Put her foot upon the electric wire, which tied her in a knot.

But the cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back, we thought he was a goner
But the cat came back; it just couldn't stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea

The cat was a possessor of a family of its own,
With seven little kittens till there came a cyclone;
Blew the houses all apart and tossed the cat around,
The air was full of kittens, and not a one was ever found.

But the cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back, we thought he was a goner
But the cat came back; it just couldn't stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea

The atom bomb fell just the other day,
The H-Bomb fell in the very same way;
Russia went, England went, and then the U.S.A.
The human race was finished without a chance to pray.

But the cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back, we thought he was a goner
But the cat came back; it just couldn't stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea

Wendy:
Lima Bean just showed up on the porch. After all the looking I did and I drove around and even found other stray cats (ugly mean ones). Still not sure if I will keep him but I will better screen the applicants this time. Maybe he can be the scubabaord mascot. Feel free to send money for vet bills.

LOL. He has adopted you ... Things happen for a reason ...

Stray cats are super smart and very entertaining. Mine would open doors, sit at the table while my family was having dinner, play hide and seek with me ... We used to live on the 2nd floor and had a garden. He would jump in a picnic basket and we would lower him in the garden :D

I also used to go for a walk with him and he would follow ... He would go everywhere with me, even on a sailing boat :)
And he would "check" I got safely on the bus in the morning going to school. He was a riot and had great sense of humour :wink:
He was just missing the speech ...

Oh, he trusted me so much ... I would cut his nails from time to time ...

It is going to be fun :)

When you buy a collar, make sure you get one that either has elastic in it or you fit it so it can go over his head easily. Cats have been known to seriously jeopardize their life when an ill fitting collar gets caught on something and they freak out. My one cat doesn't have a collar, the other one does.
Now about the jumping on tables. What I am gonna tell you is not cruel. It works like a charm. Get yourself a couple mouse traps (4 /$1 at Wally World). Set them where you don't want Lima Bean to go. Its the sound of the mousetrap going off that is the deterrent, not the trap itself. I have used this sucessuflly for years with my cats and dog.
The catnip is fun. Give it to him when you can play with him for a while. The first time I gave my one cat catnip, he had so much fun he wore himself out and slept for a day!
have fun!

Wendy,

I have 3 cats that were all strays and they are wonderful. I don't know how I would make it through life's "little ups and downs" without those three little faces in the window when I come home. I don't know much about your area, but there is 1 low cost pet hospital in Jacksonville on Herschel St. I have heard the Clay County humane society also gives shots and spay/neuters at a reduced rate. The Herschel St. Animal Hospital is about 30.00 to neuter and another 20.00 for annual shots. They also sell flea treatment and cat food at reduced rate. I can get shots, 6 mos of flea treament and 20lbs of food for all 3 cats for under $100.00. Congratulations on your new friend!

You know you want to, just look at those adorable eyes looking up at you lovingly, depending on you.......LOL
Have I said enough to make you feel guilty yet :wink:

We adopted a stray cat, she was found with her Mum and her brothers and sisters by animal rescue, they were all ferile. Not much has changed there then, she loves the comforts of home but deep down is still a wild cat. :11:

Wendy, cats are very bright, and you can teach him, with persistence, not to jump on certain places. A stern, sharp "NO"! and a gentle shove off the counter will give him the idea. My own cat picked that up first time. (Although the temptation to raid the trash was too much for him a lot of the time, he did try to be good).

You can clip his nails with a regular people-type nail clipper if you don't want to buy the cat kind, it will work fine, just make sure someone shows you how much to clip off, or you will make him bleed! (It's easy to see the vein in their nail if you look).

Cats are very low-maintenance and are cheap to feed and take care of. He'll show you what he needs. You are a good person for taking him in and giving him such a cute name.

I will send you some flea stuff, it's something you put between their shoulder blades once a month, and it works like a charm, but it's very pricey at the vet's office. (I think Advantage is up to like 40 bucks for a 4 month supply). I'll ship it out Monday when I get back to my lab. :)

Re: the advice about using mouse traps to scare a cat from jumping up where you don't want it to go, we were also told to place newspaper gently over the traps. In that way, it prevents any accidental pinching of the cat when the traps snap. (Our cat was also smart enough to walk around objects, so with newspaper covering the area, it couldn't "see" where the traps were, and got the message that the entire surface was to be avoided.) Best wishes!
