My wife and I have BP/W setups with the stiff 2" webbing harness, and I am pretty sure they would take a lot less room in our travel bags if they were disassembled.

This dis-assembly and re-assembly involves a fair amount of effort, so I am wondering if it's worth the trouble.

Anyone?

Sounds like a lot of unnecessary work to save a little space. My bags are limited by weight rather than volume so nothing to gain.

I would think leaving back plate and harness intact (wings in checked baggage) within a carry-on including regs and computer would be a thoughtful way to travel these days...

Perhaps I should have mentioned that I am trying to get it all into a carryon bag.

If getting the stiffness to pack down is giving you a hard time just work with it instead of fighting it. Let the webbing take space but fill that space with other items.

I concur with spectrum, squeeze and roll your wing up, and pack the rest of your gear around your backplate. I would not go through the effort to remove or adjust any buckles, d-rings, etc - just squish the whole bundle down and pack around it.

I separate it into 3 parts, wing, backplate and STA. plate goes on bottom, then the rest is stuffed where it will fit, but then I travel with 4 of everything so I my carry on weighs about 100# and they search it with a microscope.:D

I don't know about you, but I've spent a lot of time getting my harness set up PERFECTLY. There is no way I'm taking it apart. If the webbing is too stiff to collapse well, just pack soft stuff under and around the straps.

We deal with that minor issue with paint marker sticks. All you need to do is make a line on the webbing where it passes through a d-rain, tri-glide or buckle, and then dis-assembly and re-assembly is a breeze.

Makes service and repair quick and easy and divers get their systems back together just like they had them before.
