It's not about being emotional, but about good judgement.

When I was trained it was in the black and white that the entire surface of the cylinder must be inspected. Maybe its just my upbringing in the Army but the standard is the standard. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and as I already stated I don't work for a shop but if I did and you had an issue with removing a few dollars worth of stickers you could always take your business somewhere else. I consider adhering to standards "good judgement."

We clearly have two approaches to marking cylinders here, and one is DIR/GUE and the other is not.

If you use a variety of gases, you need temporary MOD markers on your tanks. If you use standard gases, you don't, as long as you aren't using the same tank on different occasions for different deco gases, which most of us (I think) don't. My oxygen cylinder is never used for anything but O2; my 50% bottle always has that in it, so it's fine to use permanent stickers.

The question of whether stickers need to be removed for a VIP has nothing to do with DIR and really oughtn't be here.

+1

i'll leave it here since DIR divers will run into this practice when dealing with the rest of the world, so its kinda relevant, but i think the points have been made.

I had not actually thought about name or MOD stickers being removed for VIP... and if they are going to get removed once a year, the conversation becomes more relevant in that it can more the double the cost of the VIP by the time you replace the stickers. So I'm glad to get those responses, even though I certainly wasn't expecting to go there :)

i'll get a bit more specific on one element of what I was asking... for those of you who share last names, do you use first initial [space] last name?

Also, just wondering about people's thought processes with regards to color - some people seem to have a strong preference for white letters on black background, some for the opposite.

3" letters for MOD and name. I have a three-letter first name so I use that rather than initials. Home Depot mailbox stickers work amazingly well. The reflective background is nice in low vis.

Must.....Resist.......Jabbing.......at......Wookie..........

My advice? Let the Wookie win.

I'll leave it at this. As I said, do what you must. I have 3 customers who have deco bottles and who rarely use them. Two of these guys didn't use their bottle at all for the year. When I VIPd them I had no good reason to remove the MOD 70 labels. By the book I should have, but I opted to use some judgment and not remove them. So if you want to blindly follow "by the book" go ahead, I admire you for doing it. Like most things in life a dose of common cents goes a long way, however, it's lost on many who can see only black and white. Do what YOU need to do.

I have SMITH written in felt marker on two, and RFS on the rest. I don't think any of them are marked identically with my initials or name.
