Primary reg hose around the neck? Yes/no/perhaps?
I was recently gifted a pony tank free and clear. It's a 40 and it's ready to go. I've never owned or used one before so I'm soliciting set up ideas. My interest in the pony is not to extend my bottom time or use the additional gas for anything other than contingency. I don't foresee it's use often, however I conduct a fair number of wreck dives each year and the idea of bringing it along on these dives seems reasonable.
I purchased a new reg setup from my LDS and it was suggested at that time that I purchase a long hose (5ft) for the pony reg and then bungy the excess to the tank itself and back mount it. Fair enough I though. I'm not terribly interested in slinging it, however I'm open to that idea.
A close friend and relatively experienced diver who's advice I generally trust immediately took issue with this idea. I'm certain that there will be significant variations of opinion so I figured I'd let you guys have a go at it.
I'm currently diving an Oceanic Excursion BCD with an Air2 style oct setup (yes I'm aware of the controversy of that oct setup, let's save that for the next thread). My friend suggested that I instead place the long hose on my primary reg and run the hose under my right armpit and around my neck (once). The short hose would them be placed on my pony reg and that will be slung under the same arm then necklaced for easy use. At first I balked at this idea however seeing him deploy that setup, I've begun to wonder if perhaps he's on to something.
His thinking is that in a buddy breathing scenario, I'd give up my primary with the long hose, breath my Air2 and leave the pony alone as my option of last resort.
Thank you in advance for the replies. I'm not inclined at this point to abandon my current gear setup. Just trying to make the least cumbersome use of this free pony and the additional layer of safety in can provide.
