... To have that here? really? look around, is so nice and quiet....

You never see DIR bashers in that forum either. I can't see any reason to continue to hide the content here. You are sort of obligated to insert safety caveats in the Basic forum regardless of the subject.

There are a lot of questions that won't have to be answered over and over again like in this thread if people curious about Solo can read our posts here: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/ba...499934-how-many-you-think-solo-ok-do-why.html

Akimbo, if the higher powers decide to open the room up, I'm not going to chain myself to the door and block it.

I come to SB every 8 months or so between projects at work.
Before long I either get a "friendly" reminder that I should be nicer on my posts or I simple walk away because I get too aggravated by people asking if they should wear a wet suit diving location X, I should be used to it by now I know... but I'm not

You won't see my name in any lists of helpful posters or potential customers for advertisers.... so just because I like the place the way it is, there's no need to convince me otherwise.

Just one more thing before I stop ........Could I point out the irony of solo divers opening the room to the general population with the hopes of having more company.

there ...I got out of my system.

Ana, you are a card ;-)

That speaks to my point.

There are issues connected to visibility. We lost "Whine and Cheeze" because it was visible to not just the general SB community, but to anyone who entered this site. Someone was bashing a dive op and the op pushed back. We got "Thumbs Down" to replace it. Thumbs Down can't be seen from the outside.

So are you planning to go public with the Solo forum?

I love the logic as it is. I have to ask permission to join a group of divers who want nothing to do with each other.

As someone that I respect recently said, "This is a quiet place". And that, sir, is exactly why I dive solo.

Solo divers are self-actuated people. If they can't find this forum without someone holding their hand, they don't belong here...

I did not read all the posts. I think that the forum should remain opt in only. It gives the members and management a tool to escort those who can not function as adults and are overly disruptive a way to the door. If the forum goes open, then open the WHOLE site. Tech, captains, instructors, all of it.

Was the original decision to keep the forum closed for the benefit of the members or to protect the general diving population? I admit a curiosity if SB would even allow the forum to open as read only. So far I have not seen any moderators weighing in on this discussion.

I see no reason for this to be a closed forum. I would open the forum up to anyone who wants to participate.

Good question, it would be nice to hear from NetDoc for that insight. I was under the impression it was to keep the buddy-dive-or-die evangelists at bay so solo discussions weren't lost in the din. Maybe they though it was the responsible thing to do when solo was much less accepted than today???

What's the difference between "open" and "closed"? I'm here, while I don't solo dive (or hardly) nor am I certified. And same for DIR forum while I dive in sidemount.

It's just 2 clics to get access to the board, really not a big deal. Only difference is, those 2 clics allow people in here to be more strict about rules and what they say, as they can be seen as an extra "I accept the terms and promise not to troll".
