I just got my halcyon setup not long ago and had a basturd of a time getting my spg clipped back on so i bent the d ring up like the one on my shoulder straps, now i just slide my hand forward till i feel the ring (not laying flat any more) works great for me.
I don't think the north shore is a good idea any time of year unless your on your a game and have mad skills on battling the surf. i was there this time of year with 20ft surf, hanauma is always a safe bet for beginner snorkelers.

Most bcd have a tow handle on top if this is put over the tank valve it come loose but you will never loose your tank- or get a back plate-most have two straps...my two cents.
Wet strap before and you'll be fine,its happened to all of us. i actually prefer cam straps with a little gripper inside. its a dangerous sport and we all share the same result if we fail....lets all learn and become better divers.....thats a sad loss. I noticed my better halfs tank strap...

For your primary/sec 7 is normal, i have found 22 is too short for octo on singles same for spg gauge go with what is comfy. 22 when i turned slightly i got reg pulled from mouth and boby contorted to see spg gauge i went 26 on spg 24 on octo....i dont think anything should be set in stone
